**Central countdown:** 22 years, 184 days until Object E2-X1, locally called The Black Shepherd and popularly called The Wanderer, crosses the gravitational keyhole that will doom Earth-2.

**Scientific engine:** The threat is not a full planet to be destroyed. It is a dark dwarf planet/captured moon/massive asteroid on a long-period return path. Project Last Orbit must alter its trajectory by a tiny amount early enough for that small velocity change to accumulate before keyhole passage. The final defense combines kinetic impactors, surface mass drivers, and a fusion-standoff array that vaporizes surface material to create a propulsive nudge.

**Emotional engine:** Mission captain Mira Anik and her husband Jonas Vale leave their daughter Elian on Earth to save children on another world. Because of interstellar delay, they receive her life in stored video packets. The final sacrifice makes the family cost visible.

**Main conflict:** The Suryan League accepts Earth's warning and modernizes under unbearable pressure. The Dominion of Kharos rejects Earth, worships The Black Shepherd, controls critical mines and launch corridors, and turns planetary defense into a war for survival and identity.
